Donating Blood For Donuts

So there’s a notice around here locally: donate blood, bring proof, and you get a dozen donuts from Krispy Kreme.

If you’re not in North Carolina, you might not know Krispy Kreme. A local donut and coffee chain, they have a devoted following. And while I’m not their biggest fan, having one ever so often is not terrible.

But a dozen?

No one ever died from a sugar deficiency. Lots and lots of folks have died from complications of too much sugar. And here’s one that’s right up there. Who needs a dozen donuts? But that’s not my complaint.

First, if you are that hard up for cash, things are really bad. Because the dozen donuts costs around $11.39. In other words, it’s less than a dollar each.

Now I’m a little conflicted about saying what I’m getting ready to say. Because as I noted before, I don’t have any objection to donuts on one level. There’s nothing morally objectionable about them.

But sugar is not good for you. You know that and it needs to be reinforced. Stop eating so much and your health will dramatically improve. Tieing in donating your blood to eating more sugar pretty much defeats the point of doing something for a health purpose.

Here’s the way to do something for health, starting on a personal level: just stop eating so much sugar. Our bodies become acclimated to sugar in the same way we become acclimated to various drugs. I’m not in favor of higher taxes on junk food or anything like that. I don’t think it’s morally wrong to eat sugary foods, and I won’t even say it’s bad for your health to eat them occasionally. But it’s a habit, and a bad one to eat sugary stuff all the time. Drastically cut back on your sugar and you’ll look and feel better.
